Bus Accident kills 31 People in India



According to information gathered by the local information agency, a total of 35 people died when a bus with guests for a wedding veered off the road and crashed into a deep gorge in northern India, police said on Wednesday. ).

The accident took place on Monday (19) after a bus crashed into a lake in the northern Indian state of Bihar, according to local media.

The accident happened around 11:00 am local time (2:30 am GMT), when the bus driver lost control while trying to overtake a bicycle, knocked over a bridge barrier and fell into the lake.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his "deep regret" over the accident in a message on his Twitter account, in which he said his "thoughts are with the families afflicted in these moments of pain".

About 146,000 people died in traffic accidents in India in 2015, according to official figures, mostly due to non-compliance with driving regulations and poor road conditions.

The vehicle was traveling along a winding road in the mountains of Uttarakhand state when it fell off a 500-meter cliff with dozens of people on board.

 

At the end of the rescue operations, 31 bodies were recovered and 19 injured people were rescued, state police announced via Twitter. A balance sheet previously provided reported 25 dead.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government would provide "all possible assistance to the survivors".

"At this tragic time, my thoughts are with the grieving families," he tweeted.

Traffic accidents are frequent in Uttarakhand, which includes parts of the Indian Himalayas and several areas of religious pilgrimage.

More than 20 people died in June when a bus on its way to a shrine dedicated to the Hindu deity Yamuna crashed into a gorge north of Dehradun, the state capital.
